Practical tips
- Take advice from the mason. This applies to all of the subcontractors, but in particular those carrying out the exterior coating work, because the finished look of the house depends to a large extent on the competence of these subcontractors.
- Check with the mason that the windows stand out enough and that the foundations include the necessary space for the brickwork.
- Provide the mason with a copy of the work plan, clearly indicating any special motifs to be prepared, if required.
- It is very important to properly seal the base of the wall to ensure that it is watertight.
- Ideally, the brickwork should be parallel to the foundations, extending beyond it by 3/8″.
- Protect the bricks from rain and mud. A wet brick reacts different than a dry brick on the mortar joints.
- And if the windows are not all installed, the mason will not be able to finish his work.
- Once the brickwork is finished, protect the base of the wall from stains which can be caused by rainfall, by placing a tar paper on the ground.
- Order the exterior ramps at this stage.
