Installing wood trim
To be verified whilst wood trim work is underwaye
- Check that doors at located in the correct places and that they open the right way.
- Check that doors are level and square.
- Check that the space between the door and the frame is equal on each side. Take into account paint thickness.
- It is important to fix doors firmly both at the hinges and the handles.
- If trim is varnished or colored, inform the carpenter. The trim sanding and cutting must take this into account.
- The door and window frames must be firmly supported on the wall and the box. They must be sufficiently nailed to stay in place.
- The baseboards must be level and run the length of the wall, maintaining a straight line.
- The baseboards must be firmly pushed in place, unless the wall is crooked.
- Check that the door and window frame casing is stuck in place.
- A latex joint must be stretched between the baseboards and the walls, in the joints of the trim and anywhere else necessary (when painted).
To be included in the contract
- Installation of baseboards and trim (indicate the wood species and dimensions)
- Installation of all interior doors
- Installation of the fire mantel (if there is one)
- Installation of other trim (cyma, ogee, etc.), if required
- Installation of shelves (if wooden or melamine shelves)
- Glassblowing for doors and windows if necessary
- Installation of hardware (door handles, locks, etc.)
- Installation of quarter rounds after the floor has been laid
Practical tips
It costs just about the same price to have metallic lattice shelves put up by a specialized company as it does to have melamine shelves put up by the carpenter, so choose whichever you prefer.
Do a tour of the house with the trim company representative to show him which doors are capped and which are not.
Determine together with him which way the doors are to open and indicate which side the hinges are to be placed.
Specify the door type (folding, sliding, mirror).
Door handles and hardware must be stored in a safe place. Avoid leaving them out on the construction site.
Avoid storing your trim wood somewhere humid (for example in a basement or garage) to prevent warping.
