Slater
To be verified whilst slating work is underway
- If there is a skylight, the slater must be informed in advance and the skylight must be in position upon his arrival
- Tar paper must be placed on surfaces with a slope of less than 5/12
- Flashing for valley slates must be 24" in width
- Valley slates must overhang the edges of the “facia” roof so as to expel water towards the exterior
- Check that there is a membrane cover on the entire roof perimeter at a height of 3' (or 6' is the slope is not sufficient)
- Check that there is a slate at 90 degrees at each of the junctions with the walls
- Check that there is adequate plastic in all of the roof joints
- Check that vents and maximum ventilators are installed in correct places
To include in the contract
- Place 15 lb felt paper on slopes of less than 5/12.
- Place an adhesive membrane around the entire perimeter, under ridges and valleys.
- Position tie plates in valley and wherever else needed.
- Position the start flashing.
- Install flashing and all release ventilation (maximum ventilator and plumbing ventilator).
- Lay the roof shingles.
Practical tips
It is important to schedule the delivery of the shingle at the same time the slating is being laid. As such, the slater can supervise the delivery directly on the roof.
