General contractor’s license
This license is required for all contractors whose main activity is organizing, coordinating, carrying out or having carried out, in entirety or in part, construction work as listed in one of the 11 sub-categories of Annex I of the Regulation Respecting the Professional Qualification of Contractors and Owner-Builders.
It should be pointed out that, should he so wish, the general contractor may actually never undertake any construction work. He may want to simply oversee a construction site and coordinate the work carried out by subcontractors (who may be either general contractors or specialized contractors). One such case, amongst others, would be a property developer.
The normal practice is for the general contractor to carry out or have carried out general work, for example building a house or erecting a transmission line. For this purpose, he must have tradesmen who are qualified in each of the fields covered in the contract, unless he plans to hand over the execution of the contract to subcontractors specialized in these areas.
A general contractor who has a license is authorized to tender, carry out or have carried out the construction work covered by his general contractor’s license.
