Electricity

To be verified whilst electrical work is underway

  • A smoke detector must be installed on each finished floor. The smoke detectors must all be interconnected (some municipalities require that smoke detectors be installed in the garage). Make sure that you comply with municipal regulations.
  • Approve the location of the controls (avoid exterior walls), baseboard radiators and sockets before the cables are passed. Take into account your furniture and the National Building Code.
  • Bathroom ventilators must be installed so as to ensure maximum efficiency, taking into account the insulation.
  • A hygrometer must be connected to the ventilators (except for the air exchanger).
  • The fire ventilator must be connected.
  • Check that torn vapor barriers and dislodged wool have been repaired.
  • Sockets for accessories must comply with the specifications requested
  • If your heating system is baseboard heating, make sure that heating capacity is high enough (on average 8 to 10 watts / square foot). Several factors influence the wattage calculation, for example, the ceiling height, room type, window size, etc.

To be included in the contract

  • Temporary connection and connection permit.
  • Full electrical preparation in compliance with the Building Code and according to your specifications (time and materials).
  • Full finishing electricity work (time only)
  • Wiring for telephones
  • Wiring for television
  • The electrician must be aware of the type of heating system prior to starting his work. In the case of a furnace, the electrician must be provided with the furnace’s technical specifications.
  • Inform the electrician of the types of electrical appliances you plan to install in the kitchen, such as built-in ovens, hotplates, grinders, etc.
  • If you have used a temporary electrical input, you can ask the electrician to take the necessary steps to disconnect it.

Practical tips

Indicate the location of the accessories you wish to install yourself, such as, for example: central vacuum system socket, external sockets, recessed lighting, wall lighting, special sockets, air exchangers, alarm systems, etc.

Before starting, do a tour of the house with the electrician and check together with him all questions related to the location of the various installations. Carry out another check once the work is finished

Check with the electrician if you plan to install a ventilator. In this case, the electrician will need to add a wire.

Provide the electrician with a copy of the work plan and advise him of any modifications and additions.

Plan a socket for electric garage door operation.

For the kitchen and bathroom, you must make sure that the sockets fit well with the cupboards.

Check that all additional jobs have been carried out.

To work out where to position switches, you must check the work plan to work out which way the various doors open. If you change your mind, you must advise the electrician.  If recessed lighting is to be installed and if you have agreed with your electrician that you will provide this, you must also provide him with the raised plates at this point. Otherwise he will install his own, in which case you may have to change your recessed lighting.  Inform the electrician if you plan to install very heavy lighting, so that he can ensure the wallbox is installed in consequence.
